INTRODUCTION
The Trial Embankments Malaysia (MTE) programme on soft marine clays was initiated in 1987 by Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM) and it comprised fully instrumented full scale prototype embankment trials involving 14 different ground engineering techniques. The results of this trial programme were presented at the International Symposium on Trial Embankments on Malaysian Marine Clays in Kuala Lumpur on 6 to 8 November 1989.
The Geotechnical Engineering Technical Division of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM GETD) is hosting the Symposium on Practical Applications of Ground Engineering for Embankments on Soft Soils and Exhibitions, in conjunction with the 33rd Anniversary of the Trial Embankments Malaysia at Muar, in Kuala Lumpur. The Symposium will help delegates understand the technologies and techniques for soft soil engineering necessary for satisfactory construction of embankments (or earthworks), especially to support high speed transportation facilities, over soft foundation soils comprising:
The Symposium aims at promoting the sharing of scientific knowledge, experience, skills, ideas and achievements in the designing, financing and contracting as well as construction, operation and maintenance and the rehabilitation of embankments for high speed transportation facilities amongst the ASEAN and other countries on an organised basis and with structured aims. The Symposium shall also present the latest update on monitoring measurement data and behaviour of various surviving schemes that are maintained at the 33 years old world famous MTE program. Interested authors are invited to submit Abstracts and Papers. |
National Heritage of MTEFull Scale Test Embankments Site consisting of four 3m height embankments and nine 6m height embankments in Muar, Johor, Malaysia with 30 years of settlement record respectively.
Of the 13 participating embankments including two controls only six could be eventually be constructed to completion to allow their performances during the test period to be evaluated. The other seven embankments encountered failures prior to completion of their construction. This is the first comprehensive long term test embankments to calibrate the theory and practice of settlement behaviour of soft clay. An International Symposium is scheduled to be held in Malaysia on October 18-20, 2022 (GEESS2022). The Highway Authority of Malaysia (LLM) would like to apply for UNESCO listing. |
INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR SETTLEMENT PREDICTIONS AT THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF GROUND ENGINEERING FOR EMBANKMENTS ON SOFT SOILS, 2022 (GEESS2022)
INTRODUCTION TO SETTLEMENT PREDICTIONS The International Symposium on Practical Applications of Ground Engineering for Embankments on Soft Soils, 2022 (GEESS2022) shall include an update on the monitored behaviours of the set of prototype scale trials that were featured exclusively at the International Symposium on Trial Embankments on Malaysian Marine Clays, Kuala Lumpur 1989. The prototype scale trials are called the Malaysian Trial Embankments (MTE). To encourage an active participation at the Symposium, a settlement prediction exercise is included for interested delegates to the Symposium and invited Predictors. Settlements at the end of June 2022 since surface settlement measurements at the top of the completed embankments commenced in September 1989, are required to be predicted at the centres of the two Control embankments at the Malaysian Trial Embankments program. The results of the predictions shall be announced at GEESS2022 and compared to the settlement values measured at the end of June 2022. |
PRESERVATION OF THE MTE AND FUTURE MONITORING
Efforts are underway for LLM to preserve the MTE site as well as to continue maintaining the monitoring instruments thereat and to have it kept as a World Heritage of Trial Embankments on Soft Clay. The MTE is one of the only three known very long term surviving comprehensively instrumented trial embankments on soft clays in the whole world; the other 2 are located in Sweden. But the MTE is the only full scale embankments-testing programme in the world up to 6m height fills with such a wide variety of treatment techniques implemented into the same ground. |
