Course Overview

SERIES 1: BEGINNER - Introduction to Timber Design and Eurocode 5
This entry-level course introduces the basics of timber as a structural material and the Eurocode 5 framework. It prepares participants for more detailed studies in connection and fire resistance design.

SERIES 2: INTERMEDIATE - Timber Connection Design According to Eurocode 5
This module focuses on the design of mechanical connection in timber structures. Participants will learn to apply EC5 rules to bolts, nails, screws, dowels and various connection types.

SERIES 3: ADVANCED - Timber Fire Resistance Design According to Eurocode 5
This advanced course focuses on the structural performance of timber under fire exposure, using EC5 Part 1-2. Participants will gain the skills to design fire-resistant members and evaluate fire performance.

Key Topics

SERIES 1: BEGINNER
  • Timber types and strength classes
  • EC5 structure and safety principles
  • Basic design of beams and columns
  • Load combinations and service classes
  • Hands - on beam design example
SERIES 2: INTERMEDIATE
  • Types of fasteners and their behaviour
  • Embedment strength and load-carrying capacity
  • Design calculations for axial and lateral loads
  • Detailing requirements: spacing, edge distances
  • Hands-on exercises and worked example
SERIES 3: ADVANCED
  • Timber behaviour in fire
  • Charring rate and reduced section methods
  • Load-bearing capacity in fire conditions
  • Fire-resistant detailing strategies
  • Case studies and fire design walkthroughs

Our speaker

Prof. Dr Zakiah Ahmad
Prof. Dr Zakiah Ahmad is the Dean of Research and Innovation for College of Engineering in Universiti Teknologi MARA. She obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters Degree at the Memphis State University, The United States of America before continuing her Ph.D. in Timber Engineering at University of Bath, United Kingdom. Prof. Dr Zakiah is specialising in timber engineering and timber composites. She has over 15 years of research experience in the fields of the creep and fatigue of wood and natural fiber composites, the development of bonded-in technology for joints in timber structures, laminated veneer lumber (LVL) gluad laminated timber (glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT).

Ir. Muhd Salmizi Ja'afar
Ir. Muhd Salmizi Bin Ja'afar is currently a senior lecturer at the School of Civil Engineering, Univerisiti Teknologi MARA. He is a registered professional engineer with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM). He is interested in the design and construction of buildings/bridges, particularly in the engineering design and value engineering. His research was about the design of the structures (concrete, steel and timber), bridge engineering, project management and engineering education. He is also a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). He also involved in consultancy services (registered under the Research Management Institute) focused on providing services and expertise in the design and engineering of the bridge structure. He also appointed as consultant and internal auditor by the university to carry out a technical audit for campus projects.
